Current Events Guide for May 2017 in Barcelona Barcelona has already switched the spring mode on! Which gives us a chance to enjoy a variety of fantastic events, from music and theatre to exhibition and street entertainment. This month the Catalan capital hosts the best street festivals and events for foodies, the International Museum Day and the Castellers’ perfomances.

Bach Festival: Brandenburg Concertos
The 2 instrumental works by Johann Sebastian Bach, the Orchestral Suites and the Brandenburg Concertos, have been performed millions of time all around the world. The concert hall L'Auditori in Barcelona offers everyone the opportunity to listen to 5 pieces of these 2 magnificent works, performed by AKAMUS (Akademie Für Alte Musik Berlin). All travellers and residents of the Catalan capital are invited to enjoy these 2 instrumental compendiums, which signified the end of Baroque and the start of Classicism. This concerto concludes the Cycle of Early Music Outstanding Concertos at the hall.

The Flying Dutchman by Richard Wagner
The Flying Dutchman is not just a mediocre story, this is a legendary myth about a ghost ship that can't make port and is doomed to sail the oceans forever. The opera with the same title was created in 1843 by the German composer, Richard Wagner. The theatre Liceu gives us all the chance to enjoy the fantastic production by the director Philipp Stölzl, in which reality intermingles with dream and fiction. On the stage you will meet the outstanding opera singers: Albert Dohmen and Egils Silins in the role of the Dutchman, and Emma Vetter and Anja Kampe as Senta.

La Traviata by Verdi, opera
La Traviata, one of the greatest dramas by Giuseppe Verdi, is based on the famous novel The Lady of the Camellias, written by Alexandre Dumas. At the moment it is one of the most performed and popular operas in the world. The masterpiece, presented in the walls of the Modernist gem of Barcelona, The Palace of Catalan Music lasts for 2 hours and includes more than 80 artists on stage. This fantastic opera has already captured many hearts of visitors in the Catalan capital by the libretto and performance itself.

Barcelona Guitar Trio & Dance

The Flamenco Art
The Flamenco Art, an artistic treasure of Andalusian origin conquers the emblematic Palau de la Música Catalana. Festivals, Gourmet Events And Fairs

Feria de Abril
In the first place, the April Fair was held in Sevilla. At the end of April, Barcelona will host a Catalan version of the festival, organized by migrants from Andalucía in the 60s and 70s. This fantastic tradition brings together people of all ages and interests, strolling along the rows of marquees (casetas), enjoying traditional Andalusian music and cuisine. The most popular postcard pictures women dressed in flamenco costumes and men wearing typical jackets. Do not miss the opportunity to go to a flamenco party! No doubt, the night performances of the artists are more spectacular, thanks to the amazing illuminations and the special atmosphere of the city. Many locals like to dress up in flamenco costumes and dance to the sounds of Andalusian guitars and castanets until dawn breaks. The main drink of the April Fair is “rebujito”, a mixture of sherry and Sprite. Traditionally, the incredible fireworks conclude the fair.

Biergarten - Beer festival
All beer lovers are welcome to attend the most exciting event of the upcoming month. The Beer Festival in the Spanish Village (Poble Espanyol) has been inspired by the typical German Biergarten (beer gardens), which usually combines brewing events and gastronomy. You will find yourself in the epicentre of German beer culture and culinary tasting, fascinating workshops, amazing contests and music performances! The event is created for visitors of all ages (it also includes some interesting activities for children). Bring your friends and enjoy spring vibes in the walls of one of the most beautiful landmarks of the city!

Sant Ponç Fair
Barcelona has been hosting an annual herb fair since the Middle Ages. 5 centuries ago the day of Sant Ponç (11 May) was officially announced to be the day. Since then the tradition has been carefully preserved by professional herbalists and craftsmen. So, today we all get the opportunity to see stalls in the old town, along Carrer de l'Hospital (El Raval). The fair offers fantastic cheese and mató (fresh Catalan cheese), honey, dried fruit and berries, jam and marmalade, medicinal herbs and other healthy products. The long-timers say this fair is scheduled in May for a reason: it’s the time when most medicinal plants and herbs are flowering.

Mag Fest Barcelona
No doubt, Barcelona is a magic place in Europe. So, the city hosts the event the Mag Fest Barcelona, which will bring to the Catalan capital the best magicians in the world. The best international magicians will perform within the walls of Espai Brossa and El Rei de Màgia, in collaboration with Fundación Abracadabra. The festival also includes charity magician performances at children's hospitals. The final performance will take place at Teatre Victòria, where 7 international magicians promise to amaze audiences and declare Barcelona the world capital of Magic.

Brunch - In the City
The Plaça Major of Poble Espanyol hosts the 2 upcoming electronic music events in May. Brunch - in the City is a fantastic experience for all lovers of open-air events, which offers an amazing atmosphere, a wide range of food to every taste, and of course, the best DJs sessions played by the most talented national and international artists. The event starts at lunch time and go on till the nightfall.

Human Towers/ Castellers
This fantastic tradition appeared in Catalonia more than 3 centuries ago at the festival in the town of Valls: the towers included just 2 or 3 people. Later the "castells" came up with their own rules and uniforms and decided to compete in strength and acrobatic skills. The so-called “human towers” gained their popularity in the nineteenth century, when the number of levels reached 9. The Civil War in Spain brought the movement to a halt, the tradition refounded in Catalonia in 1960. The golden era of "human tower" began in the 1990s and continues to the present day. At the moment, there are more than 100 clubs, including 12,000 members.

Exhibitions and Cultural Activities

International Museum Day
International Museum Day has been gathering together thousands of people not only in Barcelona, but also in many different cities all over the world on or around the 18th of May since 1977. On this day 80 city museums open their doors and offer a wide choice of interesting activities. This event is aimed to attract attention of the visitors and highlight the importance of cultural file of the society.

Akram Zaatari. Against photography. An annotated history of the Arab Image Foundation
Till the end of September MACBA displays the exhibition of Lebanese photographer and film-maker Akram Zaatari, who is one of the 4 creators of the Arab Image Foundation (AIF). This organisation was founded in Beirut 20 years ago in order to archive photographic material from the Middle East, North Africa and the Arab Diaspora. At the moment there are 600,000 images from such countries as Iraq, Syria, Palestine, Mexico and Senegal.
The exhibition at the MACBA reveals photographic documents, created by the artist. He reminds us that a photo can fulfil completely different roles, for example telling people’s stories, remembering important events or simply provoking positive emotions…

World Press Photo 2017
At the end of April the cultural centre CCCB hosts the well-known exhibition that presents to the audience the winners of the contest World Press Photo. A new exposition, which is to travel to 80 cities within 40 countries, will reach Barcelona ahead of its previously scheduled dates. This year the Catalan capital will be one of the first cities in the world hosting the winning photographs, along with the results of the Digital Storytelling Competition. The exhibition also offers guided tours, workshops and lectures, so all the visitors get an opportunity to explore the world of photojournalism.

Spanish Formula 1 Grand Prix The Montmeló circuit has been hosting thousands of fantastic events since its opening in 1991. In May it will welcome the participants and fans of Spain's Formula 1. Do not miss the fierce competition between Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel and Nico Rosberg and within one of the more challenging tracks! Of course, the locals will support their Spanish racer, Fernando Alonso, who came first in 2006 and 2013!

Open Day in Nàutic Club of Arenys de Mar
If you love boats and fancy a little trip from Barcelona along the coast, on 13th and 14th May, the Club Nàutic d'Arenys de Mar will open its doors for everyone who wants to try sailing. You will also get the chance to visit a fair and get acquainted will diffetent nautical equipment, check out craft stands and take part in free of charge activities! Do not miss an opportunity to sail a yacht or try stand-up paddle surfing! The event will include various games for kids and delicious local food at very reasonable prices.

Enocursa in Penedès
Food and Wine, Sports finally come together! All wine connoisseurs have definitely heard about the Torres Winery, located within 1,5 hour drive from Barcelona. But not every wine lover knows that this world-known bodega will be hosting a sport event in the middle of May! The 5th Enocursa, a 10-km race around the vineyards, seems to be a great opportunity to explore the Penedès landscape, have a great day in the fresh air and taste the best wines.
